Zak Zimmer's Photo Exhibition

Featured Artist: ZAK ZIMMER

Check out Zak Zimmer's fabulous photo exhibition at 6 pm tonight at the Sole Lab 605 1/2 Mission Ave. Oceanside: Zaks Zimmer photos will be on display at Sole Lab for one month: http://www.oceansideartwalk.org/product/zak-zimmer/

Zak Zimmer is 27 year old journalist and photographer. He is an avid traveler and has a passion for art and culture. His photos come from his time spent in Asia, South America, as well as the Caribbean. He spent the last year living on a boat while sailing the East Coast as well as the Virgin Islands. His parents support his creativity and are artistic in their own right. Practicing both sculpting as well as photography, they allow their son the freedom to travel and encourage the development of his talent. Zak finds himself drawn to vivid imagery such as lines, spaces, interesting color patterns and the occasional portrait.

The photos in this collection are a representation of various locations I came across while traveling. While they stand out on their own, what stood out to me is that the appreciation of beauty is universal. These buildings could be located anywhere in the world and somehow blend in. It gives you a sense of being connected to other cultures and people. Once we shift our focus from what divides us to what unites us, we may realize we are similar than it first may seem. The truly beautiful thing about color and architecture is that it holds the ability to transcend language. It is a way of communicating that is understood without the need for words.
Address of the showcase:

The World of Matter, (Miami, Florida) had a long run from 1967-1976. The WoM reinvented itself numerous times. What I enjoyed was the family atmosphere.

In my edition of the WoM the line up was Kenny Combs (Keyboard/Vocal), Danny Hertlein (Drums), Randy Beach (Vocal), Phil Rodriguez (Percussion), Mike Holland (Vocal), Dennis Sierra (Guitar/Vocal) and Morgan Rees (Bass).

Bands taught me responsibility, showing up on time, practicing, business, teamwork and the ability to compromise and find a middle ground. All valuable lessons for success.
Address of the showcase:

Palo Alto Festival of the Arts

August 23 & 24, 2014 • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. • University Avenue, Palo Alto

PALO ALTO - Where the emphasis is on original fine art and fine crafts, the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce will host this year's thirty-third annual Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. This festival will showcase the work of 300 artisans, many who will travel from around the country. This unique display of talent and creativity will fill University Avenue.
In the past it has attracted over 150,000 people every year from throughout California and the West Coast.

This venue of original works of art offers a variety of displays from abstract paintings to those of extreme realism; from elegant sculptures in bronze to up-cycled whimsical metal creations; one-of-a-kind functional and decorative ceramic pieces, unique mixed-media wall hangings, macro photographic images and a stunning array of exceptional jewelry hand-crafted by extraordinary artists.
A "must see" this year will be the works of first-time exhibitor, Fredrick Prescott. His animal menagerie of bigger-than-life stainless steel kinetic works of art can be seen at Sculpture Plaza, corner of University and Cowper.

Returning for its' twelfth year and always a crowd-pleaser, the Italian Street Painting Expo, located on Tasso Street and presented by the Palo Alto Weekly will feature over 60 visual artists creating their temporary chalk masterpieces on asphalt canvases ranging in sizes up to twelve-foot squares. Come both days to enjoy the magic of these paintings coming to life before being washed away after the festival closes Sunday night.

And for kids, Palo Alto's Youth Community Service, the beneficiary of the Italian Street Painting Expo, will offer budding young artists a chance to create their own chalk paintings in two-foot squares. Also plan to stop by the ever-popular Kids' Art Studio on Kipling. Palo Alto Parents & Professionals for Art will offer free art activities and provide experienced art instructors to teach young artists how to create treasured works of art of their own.

And no "day at the festival" is complete without sampling a variety of gourmet food paired with refreshing fine wines or microbrews while listening to toe-tappin' acoustical music at the Webster Stage or enjoying the original tunes being played on the Waverley Stage.

Come and enjoy the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, sponsored by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce, University Ave., August 23 & 24, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
PLEASE NOTE: the City of Palo Alto has a new ordinance banning the use of plastic & paper bags for carrying merchandise. The Chamber of Commerce highly recommends that festival attendees bring their own re-usable tote bags for easy transportation of multiple purchases.

If you are a dog owner thinking about bringing "Cuddles" to the festival, please reconsider. Large crowds can easily make a typically mellow dog very anxious & sometimes aggressive.

Admission and parking are free. For public transit information: www.511.org.

Call (650) 324-3121 or visit www.mlaproductions.com for more information.
